Lorsque Google et Apple suppriment des applications malveillantes de leurs stores, les personnes les possédant sur leurs terminaux mobiles ne sont pas informées de leur nature dangereuse. En conséquence, ce sont des millions d’utilisateurs qui conservent les malwares sur leur smartphones et exposent toutes les données qu’ils manipulent à des menaces avérées.
En 2017, Google a optimisé sa technologie de détection des menaces mobiles afin de réduire le nombre d’applications malveillantes du Play Store. Ce sont alors plus de 700.000 applis qui ont été supprimées en une année.
Cette année, l'entreprise a publié son “Year in review” dans lequel est souligné que 0.04% des applications installées depuis le Google Play sont potentiellement malveillantes. Ce pourcentage peut sembler insignifiant, mais quand on prend en compte tous les téléchargement d'applis en 2018 (estimé par Sensor Tower à 76 milliards), cela signifie qu'en 2018, 30 millions d'applications installées depuis le Google Play étaient malveillantes ou fuitaient des données.
Malgré ces mesures renforcées, les entreprises de cybersécurité mobile telles que Pradeo découvrent encore régulièrement des applications malveillantes sur les stores officiels. Suite à ces découvertes, les applications sont rapidement supprimées et les boutiques effacent toutes traces de leur existence. L’exemple ci-dessous est illustré par l'appli « Peel Smart Remote », supprimée de Google Play la semaine dernière à cause de son comportement intrusif. L’appli est actuellement encore référencée sur le moteur de recherche Google, toutefois lorsqu’on clique sur le lien, l’URL n’existe plus.
Via cette approche, les stores préviennent l’infection de nouveaux utilisateurs certes, mais ils n’entreprennent aucune démarche visant à rendre leur action rétroactive. Ce manque d’information a des répercussions massives puisque d’après une étude menée en novembre par le laboratoire de recherche de Pradeo, 89% des applications malveillantes supprimées des stores sont encore installées sur des terminaux mobiles actifs, 6 mois après leur suppression.
